Internet and mobile technology is increasingly available for children and young people 24 hours a day. Access is no longer confined to homes or schools and the virtual world this opens up carries both exciting possibilities and elements of risk. This event will examine both the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS)’s strategy on Online Safety (expected to be announced on 8 December 2009) and the correlating Scottish implementation strategy (expected in February 2010).
The event will bring together practitioners, policy makers and experts in the field of internet safety to consider risks, responsibilities and partnerships to protect young people. Considering child exploitation, educating parents on modern technology and how young people use new technology, speakers will provide information on new initiatives to limits risks. Â
Looking at UK-wide partnerships, the work of the UKCCIS and awareness-raising campaigns, this conference will provide information, highlight best practice and ask what more can be done to ensure young people are protected in an increasingly digitalised age. Examining social networking, cyber bullying and information-sharing the event will highlight the need for a greater understanding of the internet technology and methods to ensure safe usage. Speakers will also look at UK-wide partnerships to protect young people against a series of risks the internet exposes them to. Â
Agenda to include:
- The UKCCIS strategy on Online Safety
- The Scottish Government’s Implementation Plan for online safety
- Understanding how and why young people engage with the internet and mobile technology
- Adapting services to protect children and young people
- Local, national and international partnerships bringing together industry and child protection professionals
- Exploring issues around the responsibility of parents, teachers, police and the industry
